Doug Hoehn of Wyckoff, New Jersey, instructed 17 aspiring snowboard instructors at a clinic scheduled at Killington, Vermont, on January 19 and 20, 2024. Included in the session included on-mountain activities such as basic riding skills, all terrain park skills for riding rails and going off mogul jumps, communication skills, and instructional strategies. Hoehn stressed the enned for aspiring instructors to establish a rapport with new riders. This means being empathetic with the fears, concerns, and expectations of students. Hoehn emphasized that “someone can be a very good snowboard rider but still lack the skills to be a good instructor.” Hoehn added, “often a person may have learned riding skills years ago and forgotten what it is to be starting the sport. What came naturally to one person, may be extremely challenging to another.”
